Altitude sickness: A consideration During the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek

Altitude sickness is a concern for trekkers in high-altitude regions, and its crucial to address it during the Annapurna Circuit short trek. The trek reaches elevations above 3,000 meters, requiring careful acclimatization.

At high elevations, the combination of reduced oxygen and lower atmospheric pressure can produce a variety of unpredictable effects on the body – known collectively as acute mountain sickness(AMS) or altitude sickness. Treklanders Adventures prioritizes this by incorporating gradual ascents and rest days into the itinerary.

There are three rules of altitude : know the early symptoms of AMS and be willing to recognize when you have them, Never ascend to sleep at a higher altitude if you have any AMS symptoms and last if symptoms are worsening while at rest, descend immediately, no matter how late in the day.

Trekkers are advised to stay hydrated, maintain a steady pace, and listen to their bodies. Symptoms are like headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, disturbed sleep and swelling of the hands and feet. Descent and Diamox is only to cure AMS, to treat AMS the dosage is 250mg every twelve hours it has also unpleasant side effects such as numbness, tingling sensations and light-headedness .The more important is to keep hydrated while taking the medicine. Our experienced guides are trained to monitor and address any signs of altitude sickness, ensuring the safety and well-being of the trekkers.
