The trek leads to the scenic valley of Gokyo with emerald-colored glacial lakes with a climb to high Gokyo-Ri. Around amazing landscapes, where Nepal’s and Himalayas' longest Ngozumpa glaciers are located.

This makes this trek one of the most unique adventures in the whole Himalayan region; in the harmony of local colorful cultures.

The Everest Three Passes Trekking, leads to crossing Kongma-La, Cho-La, and Renjo-La, all above 5,300m high. For every hard effort reward you with a stunning panorama of giant snow peaks that surrounds the passes. It is not only a great adventure but makes one feel in high spirits accomplishing a feat of a lifetime experience. Truly a wonderful way to enjoy the thrills and excitement of climbing across high-altitude ridges. Within the close backdrop of scenic Himalayan massif mountainous landscapes of rolling high hills, valleys, and gigantic peaks.

Besides breathtaking scenery, the local native Sherpa’s heritage and cultures are equally fascinating to explore on this marvelous adventure.

Starting from the busy town of Lukla, after flying in from Kathmandu walk leads to pleasant scenic and traditional villages. The trail follows the glacial Dudh Koshi River for some days reaching the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park.

One of the world's highest mountainous parks is designated as a world heritage site with the tallest peaks on earth. The walk leads to higher terrains reaching the famed Namche Bazaar, the major town and markets of Khumbu villagers.

A wonderful place and altitude for rest days, as well for acclimatization with short hikes to scenic hills and ridges. The adventure continues heading east towards beautiful Tengboche and the impressive monastery, surrounded by an array of snow peaks. Located in midst of a lovely forest, facing the outmost panoramic views of Mt. Everest and a series of peaks. The walk then leads to the arid high country leaving the tree lines behind for mountain wilderness.

Then our route heads to Imjatse valley where Dingboche and Chukung settlements are located, where our true adventures begins.

After an enjoyable rest day at Dingboche, the walk leads to the end of scenic Imjatse to Chukung. The great adventure starts crossing the first high pass over Kongma-La, sandwiched between the great mountains of Nuptse and Pokalde. Then downhill across the Khumbu glacier to Lobuche, the adventure continues towards our next highlight reaching the Everest base camp

Enjoying the stupendous scenery of arctic terrain landscapes, walk then head for a steep climb to famous Kalapathar. The best viewpoint for the closest views of Mt. Everest with surrounding giant peaks. After achieving our goal of reaching the highest spot of the adventure, then head towards the base of Cho-La pass.

A long climb to the top of Cho-La pass, enclosed within high mountains of Lobuche East, West, and Cholatse peaks. From the high Cho-La pass a swift descent to Gokyo valley, a picturesque place. Surrounded by towering hills and mountains with serene turquoise lakes facing views of Mt. Cho-Oyu, the world’s 6th highest peak. An enjoyable and exciting moment at Gokyo valley with a climb to Gokyo-Ri for better views of the world’s highest mountain range.

From the top of Gokyo-Ri views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho-Oyu with a range of snow peaks. After Gokyo, towards the last final pass to cross over Renjo-La, a steep climb for a few hours. But makes you feel good on reaching the top of Renjo-La facing a magnificent panorama of snow-clad peaks.

Almost similar views as from Gokyo-Ri, after a rejoiceful moment on completing the last pass of the adventure. From the top of Renjo-La a long downhill leads to the western end of Khumbu valley at Thame village. Located on a windswept terrain with an old monastery above the village, facing grand views of Kwangde peaks.

Finally, our adventurous walks slowly come to an end reaching Namche Bazaar and then downhill to Lukla. Spending the final night in Lukla and around Khumbu, early morning a short sweeping flight brings you back to Kathmandu.

Unforgettable Everest Three Passes Trek Experience with Treklanders Adventures

Trekking the Everest Three Passes with Treklanders Adventures was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. This route is challenging, raw, and unbelievably rewarding, and I honestly could not have done it without the amazing support of the Treklanders team. From the very first day, everything was organized perfectly — permits, accommodations, meals, and every small detail was taken care of. My guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and patient, always checking my pace and making sure I was comfortable at high altitude. He explained every mountain, village, and culture along the way, which made the journey even more meaningful. The porter was also a true hero — always smiling and always ahead with our bags even on the steepest climbs. Crossing Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La felt like stepping into another world. Each pass offered a different kind of beauty — massive glaciers, panoramic mountain views, frozen lakes, and peaceful valleys. The sunrise from the high ridges and the deep blue colors of Gokyo Lakes are memories I’ll carry forever. What I loved most was how safe, supported, and encouraged I felt throughout the trek. Treklanders Adventures truly cares about trekkers, and their professionalism is top-class. I highly recommend this trek and this company to anyone dreaming of a life-changing Himalayan adventure. Thank you, Treklanders Adventures, for giving me an experience I will never forget.

The Everest Three Passes Trek is a thrilling expedition that explores the Khumbu region, and it features the crossing of the three very high Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La passes. Besides the trek from Everest Base Camp to Gokyo Valley and Kala Patthar, which is combined with the most beautiful viewpoints of the Everest region, the trek also includes passing through these three passes.

The trek usually takes 17 to 21 days; the duration depends on acclimatization, weather, and your walking pace. Your itinerary can be changed to fit your needs.

Although the route is tough with long walking days and high-altitude areas, some trekking experience is a must because. Good physical condition and being well-prepared will surely make the trek easier and safer.

The highest point is Kongma La Pass at 5,535 meters.

Other high-altitude points on the trek are Cho La Pass (5,420 m), Renjo La Pass (5,360 m), Kala Patthar (5,643 m), and Everest Base Camp (5,364 m).

This trek is rated as a difficult one due to reasons such as steep climbs, high-altitude terrain, and long trekking days. However, if one is properly acclimatized, takes a slow and steady pace, and is guided by a licensed trekking guide, a trekker with good physical fitness and enough determination can make it.

You can do this trek in the best weather conditions during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). The seasons give off stable weather, clear mountain views, and safer trail conditions.

The Three Passes Trail is less congested than the standard EBC route, and therefore, there are fewer people. It makes it perfect for those hikers who want to be in nature and experience the Himalayas quietly.

Absolutely not, In compliance with Nepal's trekking laws, a licensed guide must accompany high-altitude treks. Besides safety in those sections, like for Cho La and Renjo La, where it is a bit difficult, the presence of a professional guide is very helpful.

To enter the Everest region and do a trek there, visitors need a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit.

Still, travel insurance is a must. The insurance must cover high-altitude trekking as well as emergency helicopter rescue because this is a trek that goes above 5,000 meters, and the weather can change very quickly.

Best time to visit FAQs

The Everest Three Passes Trek can be done at its best during the spring (March to May) and the autumn (September to November) seasons. It is during these times that the weather is more stable and thus safer and easier to cross the high passes of the mountain. Also, the trekkers find the temperature quite comfortable while the trail is in good condition and the view is clear.

In spring, the weather is warmer, the rhododendron forests are in full bloom, and there are more daylight hours. The temperatures are cool at lower altitudes and are still bearable even at the high passes. This season will be perfect for trekkers who are attracted to colorful landscapes and want to have good weather at the same time.

The excellent weather during autumn means that trekkers will enjoy clear skies, dry trails, and spectacular views of the Himalayas. Once the monsoon has passed, the air is very clean, and this is why Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and Cho Oyu can be seen with great clarity. Additionally, it is one of the safest periods to cross the high passes due to the stable weather patterns.

Winter (December to February) is generally not advisable because the three high passes are often icy and covered with deep snow. The temperature can go down to an extreme, thus making the trek hard and even dangerous. Therefore, only very skilled trekkers carrying the right equipment and having support would take this route in winter.

The monsoon (June to August) period is definitely not the time for those wanting to do the Three Passes Trek. The continuous rain makes the trails slippery, visibility becomes poor, and flights to Lukla are frequently delayed. Besides, the high passes may not be safe due to fog, rain, and unpredictable conditions. Thus, this season should be avoided for safety reasons.

Many people would say that the best mountain views come in the autumn season. The skies are typically clear, allowing for very impressive sunrises and sunsets to be seen from vantage points such as Gokyo RI, Kala Patthar, and Renjo La. Although spring provides great visibility as well, it’s real beauty is in the colorful forests and warm trekking conditions.

Trek Difficulty FAQs

The Everest Three Passes Trek is often rated the hardest in the Everest region. The main issues are crossing three very high mountain passes over 5,300 meters, very long walks almost every day, and harsh high-altitude terrain. A person of treks must have power fitness, good stamina, and mental toughness to undertake this journey and come out safely.

There is an extra risk of the trek as it involves steep ascents and descents, crossing glaciers, trails full of loose rocks, and long hours of walking. Besides requiring the driver to maintain his or her pace well for an extra effort in attempting, it is not specified in the passages about the weather conditions at high altitudes changing quickly, and so the route is the most challenging of the three pass routes.

Yes, it is highly recommended that one has had previous trekking experiences. One does not need to be a professional climber, but one with exposure to high-altitude and multi-day treks will find the journey easier. Those who have done EBC, Annapurna Base Camp, or similar treks can generally adjust well to the Three Passes trek.

On most days, six to eight hours of walking is planned, but on high-pass days, it might be longer, sometimes even up to nine or ten hours. The trails are not only steep and rocky, but they also put pressure on your physical condition, especially around the passes. To stay away from exhaustion, the right rest, hydration, and pace should be followed.

The absolute beginners should not be the target clients of this trek. Nevertheless, a beginner with top-level fitness, strong willpower, and previous practice may give it a try if supported by a professional team. It is more precautionary to have done one moderate trek before the Three Passes one.

Altitude Sickness FAQs

Altitude sickness is one of the most serious conditions that can occur when trekking above 5000 meters several times. It is very important to take days for acclimatization, walk slowly, drink a lot of water, and follow the instructions of the guide. Treklanders Adventures provides the necessary days for acclimatization to lessen the risks.

It has been highlighted that altitude sickness is a main problem of the trek that ascends more than 5,300 meters several times. Signs of the disease are headaches, dizziness, and vomiting. Because of the appropriate acclimatization schedule followed by the Treklanders Adventures, one can walk slowly, drink adequately, and still adjust safely.

Guide your symptoms to your guide immediately. In case of light symptoms, the situation can be improved with rest and drinking; however, in the case of serious symptoms, going down is a must. Treklanders' guides have the first aid diploma, and unlike others, they are very competent in managing the issues of altitude safely and professionally.

Accommodations FAQs

The main accommodation on the Everest Three Passes Trek is through local tea houses and lodges. The lodges provide modest but comfortable rooms. These lodges are managed by local Sherpa families and thus can offer you not only a warm but also a genuine Himalayan experience. Generally, beds will be twin beds, and the rooms will be equipped with blankets and simple furniture suitable for trekkers.

Most of the rooms are twin-sharing, which is a room with two beds shared by two people. You can request single rooms in lower villages, but at higher elevations, single rooms may sometimes be unavailable due to space limitations, especially during peak seasons.

The common dining room is typically warmed with a wood-burning or yak-dung stove. Thus, one can practically relax and eat meals in a heated place. On the other hand, the bedrooms are not heated, so trekkers are advised to bring a good warm sleeping bag, especially for cold nights when crossing the high passes.

In general, electricity is accessible in the villages where one can charge their phones and cameras. However, the power supply gets limited the higher you go. There may be a small fee for charging. It is better to have a power bank with you, particularly for long days between remote areas like Dzongla and Gokyo.

Hot showers can be found in most tea houses of the lower and mid-altitude villages. At higher altitudes, however, hot water may be in short supply or steam-powered only. A small extra charge may be applied for hot water showers.

Lodges at lower altitudes may have attached bathrooms, but as the altitude increases, toilets are mostly shared and located outside the main building or down the stairs. High-altitude lodges typically have basic squat toilets or simple western-style toilets.

Most tea houses provide blankets; however, they are usually not warm enough for freezing temperatures. Therefore, trekkers should have with them a sleeping bag capable of withstanding temperatures from -10°C to -15°C so that they will be comfortable and safe at night.

Food & Drink FAQs

Food from fresh ingredients is available at tea houses on the entire route. The basic and most frequently ordered meal is Dal Bhat, a meal consisting of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickles. It is so popular as a main meal because it is very energizing and because of the free refills. There is also plenty of choice for vegetarians and vegans, such as noodles, fried rice, pasta, pancakes, soup, eggs, potatoes, and Tibetan dishes like momos and thukpa. These are modest but clean meals prepared especially for trekkers so that their days of trekking are not hindered.

That is right; the meals are safe in most cases because they are freshly made in places where the locals live. Besides, tea houses maintain necessary hygienic standards, and safe-to-eat-in situations, such as Dal Bhat and soup, could be regarded as the most secure ones due to the boiling process. In order not to cause stomach troubles, it would be better not to eat raw salad or any other uncooked foods at high altitudes.

Throughout the Everest region, vegetarian food is never a problem. Many of the trekkers resort to vegetarian food because they find it more convenient for their digestion at higher altitudes. Vegan meals can even be created with very simple changes, like no butter or milk. Letting your guide or the lodge owner know beforehand will make it easier for them to serve you the right food.

Non-vegetarian foods such as chicken or meat from a yak might be available; nevertheless, it is not advisable most of the time, particularly at higher altitudes. The meat is carried on the back of the mountains without cooling, which might spoil it. To be safer, a great number of trekkers decide to go vegetarian after Namche Bazaar.

Definitely, water for drinking is accessible in every village. One can purchase water in bottles in lower regions, but the price doubles with each upward step. The vast majority of the trekkers choose to refill their bottles with water that is filtered, boiled, or purified and that is provided by the tea houses.

Wi-Fi, Mobile Network & Charging FAQs

Wi-Fi is accessible at various tea houses en route, mainly in big villages such as Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, Gokyo, and Thame. Most of the lodges are equipped with the Everest Link system through which paid Wi-Fi cards are provided at a reasonable speed for small talk, internet surfing, and photo uploading. But the connection gradually gets weaker and slower the farther you go up, particularly in the areas around the three high passes.

The net connection becomes less and less dependable as one goes higher in the mountains. You may have a good internet connection in the lower regions, while in the villages at high altitude, such as Lobuche, Dzongla, and Chhukung, the Wi-Fi can be very slow, have little access, or be out of service because of the cold or power supply. It would be a good idea to have the maps downloaded for offline use and to save all the necessary information in advance.

Alright, both NTC and Ncell SIM cards are valid in the majority of the parts of the Everest region. NTC normally provides better signal strength after Namche Bazaar, whereas Ncell can also be a good option for lower places. The network may become unavailable in the most distant parts, or you may lose connection while crossing between the passes, so one cannot fully depend on their SIM signal throughout the trek.

Mobile network coverage is minimal at best and most likely nonexistent when the route goes over Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La Pass. These areas are far away from the city and have no natural protection; therefore, in these places, people must rely on the next village or lodge for Wi-Fi or a mobile signal.

Yep. It is safe to say that if you are in want of a steady internet connection throughout your journey, then an Everest Link card has got to be purchased. These tea houses sell these cards, which have data plans of varying sizes. Generally, a single card can be used in different villages that connect to the Everest Link network.

Practically, and very likely, the situation of carrying phones by the licensed trekking guides from Treklanders Adventures is mainly for communication. In addition, they might have radio communication in case of emergencies. When altitude sickness or injury occurs, guide staffs are the ones who can make the call to the rescue team, helicopter service, or the medical department in the closest settlements.

Guide & Porter FAQs

A licensed guide is definitely required as the trek is very demanding. Besides the extreme cold and weather in the three highest passes, a guide is needed to find the accurate path and local knowledge. A guide takes care of your safety, manages health problems related to high altitude, and helps you find the best trail throughout the journey.

The guide leads the way with a safe pace, takes care of lodging, helps you with food, watches your health, and helps you with altitude treatment. They also talk with locals, take care of permits, check the weather, and, in case of an emergency, make decisions swiftly. Guides also give you a lot of information about the mountains, culture, and the way the locals live, which makes your trek richer.

Porters can be very helpful as this walk is long and there are quite a few steep climbs. One porter will look after your main bag while you carry a small daypack on your back. This helps you save energy for the hard parts of the trek at high altitudes and also decreases the chance of getting altitude sickness through overexertion.

An average porter will carry between 15 and 20 kilograms of luggage. Treklanders Adventures adopts the most responsible tourism standards, and porters deliver good quality gear, food, and rest besides moderate loading.

Definitely, Treklanders Adventures supports the employment of guides and porters who have received professional training and have experience in climbing high places. They have done quite a few trips to the Everest region, and thus, they have the skill set necessary to help with the issues of altitude, bad weather, and evacuation in the case of accidents.

Most of the trekking guides have a good command of English and can speak about the route, safety instructions, food, and daily activities without any problem. Some guides may also be able to speak a few more languages if you wish.

Permits & Entry Requirements FAQs

Two of the most important permits are required for trekking in the Everest region: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. Moreover, the above pemits authorize you to enter the protected areas, use the local trail villages, and have full access to the Three Passes route that combines EBC, Gokyo, and all three high passes.

You can get the Sagarmatha National Park Permit at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu, or at the park entrance gate in Monjo. In case you provide Treklanders Adventures with your trekking plans, your guide will obtain this permit for you.

The local government of Khumbu issues this permit to the people coming to the Everest region. This is an area-specific permit that has replaced the old-time mode card for the Everest region. Lukla and Monjo are the places where you can get this permit, and during the trek, your guide will complete the paperwork on your behalf.

A TIMS card is not necessary if you are going to the Everest region. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is the one that now serves as a formal entry permit for trekkers in the Khumbu area.

Definitely, both permits are normally part of the trekking package when you are doing the Treklanders Adventures trip. In addition to that, your guide is taking care of all the paperwork, payments, and check-post formalities while you are out of town and have no idea of the local language and customs.

It is not necessary to have an extra permit if Kongma La, Cho La, or Renjo La Pass is in your travel itinerary. The standard Everest Region permits/e-cards hold good for the entire Three Passes circuit, which covers EBC, Kala Patthar, and Gokyo Valley.

Preparation and Packing FAQs

Being physically fit is necessary for the Everest Three Passes Trek, which is an extremely challenging high-altitude trek in the Himalayan region of Nepal. You need to start your body conditioning 4 to 6 weeks before the trek, and this should include hiking, jogging, cycling, stair climbing, and some form of strength training. The main thing is to focus on developing your leg endurance, breathing capacity, and overall stamina. Also, if you can go on long hikes with some weight on your back, it will definitely get your body accustomed to the daily trek routine.

Wearing several layers of clothes is the most effective way of keeping your body temperature at a comfortable level, as it allows you to add or remove layers easily. Have with you quick-dry base layers, a couple of fleece jackets, a good-quality down jacket, trekking pants, and a waterproof and windproof jacket. Don't forget your gloves, warm hats, buff or neck gaiter, sunglasses, and thermal socks. Layering gives you the freedom to quickly adjust to the abrupt temperature changes, which are a common occurrence in the mountains.

It is strongly advised that a person should have a pair of robust, waterproof hiking boots that offer good support to the ankle. The boots you wear will have to withstand rocky surfaces, ice-covered areas, and steep trails that are close to the three high passes so that you can walk without the risk of slipping. Before putting on your boots for the trek, they should be well broken in. After a hard day of trekking, you may put on lighter footwear like sandals or camp shoes to walk around comfortably in the tea houses.

The warm sleeping bag (-10°C to -15°C), trekking poles, a tough backpack, a headlamp, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottles, and purification tablets are among the most important consumables you need to be prepared for the trek. It is advisable to have a compact first aid kit with basic pills as well as altitude tablets. Tread with Treklanders Adventures, and the guide will be equipped with safety gear for all parts of the route, especially the ice fields.

It is enough to have only a light daypack, which should not be more than 5 to 7 kilograms, that contains the basic necessary things such as water, food, an extra warm piece of clothing, a camera, personal stuff, and sunscreen. The fact that your porter will be carrying your big bag allows you to walk at your own pace, thereby saving energy for the difficult hikes at high altitude.

If you want to, you can bring your own sleeping bag and trekking poles, but remember that this is not a requirement. Treklanders Adventures provides good-quality sleeping bags, trekking poles, and other materials for the comfort and safety of the clients during their trek. You can either rent our equipment or use your own if.

One's mindset is definitely a huge factor in completing the Everest Three Passes Trek successfully. There are difficult days of walking, almost impossible weather, and the tough crossing of the high passes. Training your mind to accept slow walking, keeping up your patience, dealing with altitude changes, and staying positive will turn the whole trek into a far better and even pleasurable experience.

Health and Safety FAQs

In general, walking paths are safe; however, according to experts, one can find the Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La passes very steep, rocky, and ice-covered. The weather can also be uncomfortable and change quickly, which can make your guide's decision on the best time to cross will also depend on the weather conditions accompanying his assessment.

One should always take freshly cooked hot meals, purified water, good sanitation, and proper clothing for the cold. Rest, as well as walking slowly, helps one to prevent diseases.

Definitely, it is so safe when you go with a licensed guide. Treklanders Adventures makes the trek safe even for solo travelers by ensuring there are proper navigation, communication, and support.

Medical Access and Insurance FAQs

Absolutely, travel insurance is a must. High-altitude trekking, such as this up to 6,000 meters, must be covered, and in the event of emergencies such as altitude sickness or a dislocation, a helicopter evacuation must also be included in the insurance policy.

There are small health stations scattered in villages like Namche, Pheriche, and Gokyo. For serious cases, helicopter evacuation may be necessary. Along with carrying a first aid kit, Treklanders guides keep an eye on your health all the time during the trek.

Transportation FAQs

The trek is kicked off by a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountain landing spots in the world. The plane ride takes about 25–30 minutes and gives incredible views of the Himalayas. Treklanders Adventures gets you all the flight tickets and makes sure everything is in order on your travel day.

Lukla flights are very much dependent on weather conditions. In the best times of the year, flights are generally on schedule, but slowdowns as well as cancellations due to low visibility, strong winds or clouds over the airstrip can still occur. Treklanders Adventures always provides you with extra days in the plan to be used in case of any delay so that you can continue your itinerary smoothly.

When flights are not operated, the team will set up different alternatives for you, for example, departure from Ramechhap Airport by plane or going up in a helicopter (extra charge may be there). Your guide and Treklanders service team are there for you handling the situation and focusing mostly onQE your safety and comfort.

Indeed, helicopter flights are there for you and can be made ready if you fancy a quicker or more accommodating way. Helicopters travel when the weather is bad and regular flights are not operating. Treklanders can help you get on a shared or a private helicopter flight, whichever you like.

Ordinarily, walkers can come down to Lukla on foot and then catch a return flight to Kathmandu. In case there is an urgent need, helicopter rides back can also be arranged particularly if there are weather-related delays in the flight schedule.

Certainly, besides flights, airport transfers, and hotel pick-ups, the latter along with drop-offs, are part of your Treklanders Adventures package. To provide ease and comfortable moving before and after the trek, private transportation has been set up.

Access to the Everest region is available by foot since there are no roads leading to the area. To move around the mountains one has to walk through the trails, however, in the case of an emergency, helicopters are on call for evacuation purposes.
