Hidden Gems of Nepal: 7 Offbeat Treks Beyond Everest & Annapurna (Ultimate Guide to Remote Himalayan Adventures)

Introduction

Kanchenjunga Trekking
Stunning mountain views during the Kanchenjunga Trek

Nepal hosts eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks, yet the country's most precious secrets are hidden far from the popular routes to Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit. Here are seven amazing, offbeat treks that offer solitude, authentic culture, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery without the crowds.
Every year, many people on foot arrive in the Khumbu Valley and the Annapurna region to wear out their shoes with their steps for some of the world's most famous base camps. Such journeys are on the role of great ones and rightly so. The sight of the sun from Poon Hill, the Khumbu Glacier's blue ice, the prayer flags above Namche Bazaar, these are the moments that really touch the soul. Besides these well-known spots, the trekking worlds of Nepal are so vast that most travellers never even get to see them.

On top of eight of the fourteen highest peaks being in Nepal, this country also boasts of over 1,400 mountains higher than 6,000 meters, the geographic diversity that covers from the subtropical jungles to the Tibetan plateau's stark moonscapes, all these within a smaller area than that of the state of Arkansas. In such diversity are valleys, kingdoms, and high passes that have only a few trekkers every season. Remote regions where trails are still raw; guesthouses are few, and people meet you with genuine curiosity instead of rehearsing tourist smiles.

With us at Treklanders Adventures, we have been guiding trekkers in the Nepal Himalayas for quite a few years by following the principle of Atithi Devo Bhava, the guest is God. Our licensed guides are aware not only of the well-known routes but also the secret ones. Here is a list of seven incredible offbeat treks that are further away from Everest and Annapurna.

"The best Himalayan experiences are not always the most famous ones. They are the ones that leave you transformed — by silence, by altitude, by a culture you did not expect."

Why Choose an Offbeat Trek in Nepal?

Upper Dolpo Trek
Upper Dolpo

Before getting into the trails themselves, a worthy question is why the roads less travelled should be sought out when the famous ones are so good? The answer is complex, very personal, and it completely varies from one trekker to another. Nevertheless, some elements are common for most of us.

Being Alone and Having Space

At Everest Base Camp in peak season, the trek route is shared each day with lots of other trekkers. By then, all teahouses are almost fully booked. On the other hand, in Nar Phu Valley, even after walking a whole day, your group may not see another trekker; the only sounds are the wind, the water, and footsteps on the ancient stones.

Living Culture

Since communities along well-trodden routes depend on tourism, their culture has changed. But in places like Tsum Valley, Dolpo, and the villages of Limi, people continue the way of life of their grandparents. Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Bon religion ceremonies, salt trade caravans, and pre-modern agricultural rhythms present an anthropological wealth not found in mainstream circuits.

Ecological Diversity

Since Nepal's lesser-known areas attract fewer tourists who might disrupt the local ecosystems, they are often more pristine. In Dolpo, a rare sighting of tracks of the snow leopard, red pandas deeply hidden in the forests of Kanchenjunga, Himalayan blue sheep grazing at the ridges of Nar Phu, for those who have the patience and the silence, the animal viewing along these paths, so far away from human settlements, can be quite thrilling.

A Genuine Sense of Exploration

Walking a path that doesn't feature in every travel booklet, you need to obtain a special permit to get in, and your friends haven't been there either. There's a feeling, almost at the gut level, that such a journey is very different. These treks bring today's explorers back to a mindset of exploration, the very first reason people went to Nepal.

1. Upper Mustang Trek – The Forbidden Kingdom

Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang
  • Max Elevation: 3,840m:
  • Duration: 12-16 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Best Season: Mar-Nov
  • Special Permit Required

Upper Mustang is perhaps the most well-known side of Nepal's offbeat trekking destinations, yet it is so remote that it is really a high-altitude desert, and architecturally, spiritually, and climatically, it seems more like Tibet than the Nepal that most people know. Also called "Forbidden Kingdom" and "Kingdom of Lo", Upper Mustang was a completely restricted area for trekking until 1992 and was only slowly opened to international visitors with a strict permit system, which still limits visitor numbers up to now.

It is the scenery that will first grab your attention. The Kali Gandaki, reportedly the world's deepest gorge, runs through a region of remarkable geological drama: eroded ochre and rust red cliffs with ancient cave monasteries, wind-figured rock pillars sometimes referred to as fairy chimneys, and a high plateau leading to Tibet that seems to carry along the geological time with its perfect serenity. Whilst the majority of Nepal treks are in the Himalayas' rain shadow, where the monsoon hardly reaches, which means Upper Mustang is not only one of the few Himalayan areas where trekking in June, July, and August is viable, but is also one of the most spectacular.

Home to the walled city of Lo Manthang, former capital of the Kingdom of Lo, with palace, whitewashed streets and monastery-lined alleys and ancient prayer wheels turning in the wind, Lo Manthang is the cultural highlight of the trek. Due to its loop around Mustang rather than simply out and back, the 12-day version allows for more exploration and is far more rewarding than the trekking standard route. Travelling up the western side of the Kali Gandaki and returning down its wilder and less populated eastern bank, where villages are more traditional and the scenery arguably more spectacular.

Classical Tibetan Buddhist culture was essentially extinguished within Tibet proper after 1959. In Upper Mustang, it continues to thrive in its ancient and unaltered form. Ancient art, immense monasteries filled with 500-year-old thangkas, lamas practicing ceremonies that have been performed for millennia and locals that continue to live off the land through agriculture and livestock grazing as their ancestors have for centuries... Welcome to the real-life museum contained within Upper Mustang.

Treklanders Tip: Remember to reserve a permit for the Upper Mustang restricted area long before your trip. The fee is USD 500 per person for the initial ten days. The Treklanders team oversees the permit work and will prepare a travel plan that allows you to spend the maximum time in Lo Manthang, while also giving you extra days to discover secret gompas on the eastern return path.

2. Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley – Nepal's New Classic

Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek
Stunning views of Mount Manaslu and Birendra Lake
  • Max Elevation: 5,106m
  • Duration: 18-24 days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Best Season: Mar-May /Sep-Nov
  • Restricted Permit Required

When the Manaslu Circuit opened international trekkers in the early 1990s, it quickly garnered a reputation as a successor to the popularity of the Annapurna Circuit. Essentially, Manaslu offered all the same scenery and cultural immersion but without half the tourists. Fast forward over 30 years, and that description is still entirely accurate. Trekking the circuit around Mt. Manaslu (8,163m), the eighth-highest peak on the planet, is among the most fulfilling mountain wilderness journeys you can take in Nepal.

Looping around Manaslu in a horseshoe formation, the trekking route is characterized by wildly divergent ecosystems ranging from subtropical bamboo and rhododendron forest in the lower Budhi Gandaki valley to the stark, ethereal high mountain landscapes surrounding the Larkya La pass (5160m). Ethnically, this diversity is reflected in the bewildering variety of Gurung villages in the lowlands, Nubri Tibetan-Buddhist communities in the mid-hills, and centuries-old Tsum villages in the far north. There are endless mountain vistas, taboos unique to individual villages, towering cliffs with ancient Buddhist ruins balanced precariously upon them, and some of the most genuinely wild landscapes in Nepal.

This trek becomes something truly special when you add to the Tsum Valley extension. One of the last regions to become accessible to trekkers (beyond established mountain villages), Tsum was forbidden to outsiders until 2008. Considered a “beyul” or sacred hidden valley consecrated by Guru Rinpoche (the enlightened being Padmasambhava), this hidden valley is among the last places in Nepal where you can witness traditional Himalayan Buddhist culture largely undisturbed by the modern world. Tsum culture is practiced as it has been for centuries. Ancient Buddhist monasteries cling to vertical cliffs; monks chant beautifully archaic prayers that haven’t changed since the valley was first settled; and the valley itself seems to exist in some sort of fairytale state of being.

Crossing the Larkya La (5160m) pass is another crowning achievement of this trek. A sketchy, windswept high mountain pass that is always crossed early in the morning with a healthy head of adrenaline pumping through your veins, the ascent to Larkya La is easily one of the most incredible moments of your journey. You stand atop the pass with prayer stones littering the windswept ground around you, take in the hugest glacier-cloaked amphitheatre of peaks that you’ve ever seen, and feel that overwhelming sense that you have just truly wild place under your boots. (Note: The 20-day itinerary, including Tsum Valley, is considered strenuous and requires a group of at least two trekkers with a licensed Nepal guide. It cannot be booked as an independent trek.

Treklanders Tip: Treklanders' Manaslu Tsum travel plan is tailor-made to provide enough time for acclimatization prior to the Larkya La crossing. Our guides are trained in wilderness for first aid, and every trekker is equipped with a personal emergency communication device that works in the most isolated areas of the valley.

3. Dolpo Trek – The Last Himalayan Wilderness

  • Max Elevation: 5,360m+
  • Duration: 18-28 days
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Best Season: Apr-May / Sep-Oct
  • Highly Restricted

If Upper Mustang is the cultural echo of Tibet, then Dolpo is its voice raised in full song. A vast and almost inaccessible region in western Nepal along the Tibetan border, Dolpo might be the remotest and most logistically difficult trekking destination in the entire country. This is precisely what makes it extraordinary. This is a landscape of frozen desert, piercing blue skies, unnamed peaks, and stone-walled villages that seem to have grown naturally from the mountain slopes themselves.

Dolpo was first brought to the world's attention by Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard and the 1999 movie Himalaya. But, even nowadays, not many trekkers decide to go there. The costs of permits are quite high; it is tiresome in terms of logistics, and most of the Dolpo treks have fully self-sufficient camping as an absolute must; there are no teahouses in the upper parts. Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest Himalayan lakes in the world, is the main feature. It is located 3,611 meters and sparkles in dazzling and hardly believable shades of turquoise and emerald. The Phoksundo National Park is a habitat of snow leopards, Himalayan wolves, blue sheep, and an incredible variety of birds. The old Salt Trade Route that links Nepal and Tibet are still being used by a few yak caravans, a truly medieval sight in its timelessness.

The ancient pre-Buddhist faith of Tibet, the Bon religion, is still here and quite lively. Dolpo is definitely not for soft-hearted, light budget, or ill-prepared persons. On the other hand, for those who might be capable, it could be Nepal's greatest adventure.
Treklanders Tip: Dolpo is a place that needs full logistics support for a camping expedition with tents, a kitchen, and full provisions. Our Dolpo team has been running expeditions there for over fifteen years, and always keeps emergency protocols ready, including helicopter evacuation arrangements for all groups.

4. Nar Phu Valley Trek – The Himalayan Time Capsule

Nar Village - Nar Phu Valley Trek
Nar Village - Nar Phu Valley Trek
  • Max Elevation: 5,320m
  • Duration: 14-18 days
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Best Season: May-May / Sep-Nov
  • Restricted Area Permit

Hidden on the north side of the Annapurna massif near the Tibetan border, the twin valleys of Nar and Phu offer a truly remarkable and isolated Himalayan experience. This restricted region was only made accessible to foreign trekkers in 2002, and to this day, it has a relatively low number of visitors; it continues to be one of the most unspoiled cultural and natural spots in the Annapurna area.

The path through the Nar Phu gorge is itself quite a spectacle: towering canyon walls, roaring water, and a narrowing path that with each hour of walking feels more and more removed from the modern world. Then the valleys suddenly appear, and you will see yourself surrounded by a landscape of bare, wind-eroded stones, honeycomb-like mud brick villages, and the Tibetan Buddhist culture prevailing in the purest form.

In fact, the village of Phu is probably the most beautiful settlement in the Annapurna region. Mud-colored, flat-roofed houses organically rising from the valley floor are surrounded by peaks exceeding 6,000 meters. Prayer flags adorn the rooftops, ancient chortens stand guard, and the vibe here is so strongly Tibetan culturally that it is almost tangible. These communities deliberately stayed isolated for centuries as a way of preserving their culture.

Kang La Pass- Nar Phu Valley Trek

Kang La pass (5,320 meters) is a high-altitude crossing that comes with some of the most breathtaking views of Annapurna II and Gangapurna in Nepal. It is mandatory to have a licensed guide, and the minimum group size is two. These are conditions that improve the experience rather than reduce it by providing authentic local knowledge all along.

Treklanders Tip: The Nar Phu trek perfectly complements the Annapurna Circuit. Our guides are familiar with the optimal itinerary that lets you enjoy the two without unnecessary backtracking. In most cases, the duration of the trip will be extended by 5-6 days.

5. Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek — Third Highest, First in Solitude

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek
Stunning view of Mt. Kanchenjunga during the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek
  • Max Elevation: 5,143m (Pangpema)
  • Duration: 20–25 Days
  • Difficulty: Very Strenuous
  • Best Season: Mar–May / Oct–Nov
  • Special Area Permit

At 8,586 meters, Kanchenjunga is the world's third-highest mountain and quite possibly the least visited of the Himalayan giants' base camps. Located in Nepal's far northeastern corner, bordering the Indian state of Sikkim, the Kanchenjunga region has historically been difficult to access and remains relatively undeveloped for trekking tourism. Its name means "Five Treasures of Great Snow", a reference to the five summits of the massif that represent five repositories of salt, gold, gems, grain, and sacred scripture in local mythology.

The Kanchenjunga Circuit, which visits both the north and south base camps for a full circuit of the massif, is a genuine wilderness expedition. Unlike Everest or Annapurna, there is no developed teahouse network through much of the route. Camping is required for the upper sections. The trails are rough, the passes high and genuinely challenging, and the weather is unpredictable. But the rewards include mountain views that rival anything in Nepal, encounters with the Kirant ethnic culture of eastern Nepal, one of Nepal's most ancient indigenous traditions and a sense of having truly earned your place at the foot of a Himalayan giant.

The rhododendron forests of Kanchenjunga are probably the most incredible in Nepal. In particular, April and May are their peak time when the countryside smolder with the output of red, pink, and white flowers at different altitudes one after the other. The biodiversity of the Conservation Area is fantastic: In addition to red pandas, snow leopards, musk deer, and Himalayan black bears, this area has been home to more than 250 species of birds.

The communities along the trail are primarily Limbu and Rai people of eastern Nepal. These two ethnic groups have very different traditions, including oral literature, music, and ceremony, from Sherpa or Tamang cultures of central Nepal, thus providing a unique cultural facet to the already wonderful mountain adventure.

Treklanders Tip: You shouldn't go on Kanchenjunga without an experienced guide capable of navigating the region. Treklanders' guides for eastern Nepal are well versed not only with the route but also with local communities and emergency protocols in such a remote area. Two trekkers minimum per group.

6. Rara Lake Trek — Nepal's Most Beautiful Secret

Rara Lake - Rara Lake Trek
Rara Lake - Rara Lake Trek
  • Max Elevation: 3,500m
  • Duration: 10–14 Days
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Best Season: Mar–May / Sep–Nov
  • National Park Entry

Resting at an elevation of 2,990 meters in the remote far-western hills of Nepal, Rara Lake is not only the most beautiful lake in Nepal, but it’s also the one that most trekkers have not seen. The largest lake in Nepal sits nestled inside Rara National Park amongst dense pine, spruce, and juniper forests, towering snowcapped mountains in the distance, and magical waters that range from blue to green to violet, depending on the season and lighting.

Rara National Park itself, which includes the lake and surrounding area, is one of the most untouched national parks in Nepal. Its lack of accessibility to get there, you fly by small plane to either of two airstrips within the park at Jumla or Talcha, and then walk for several days, means that its ecology remains intact in a way that more accessible places cannot. Find Himalayan black bears, leopards, rare gaurs, musk deer, yellow-throated martens, and best of all, dozens of species of birds that you won’t find anywhere else in Nepal, like the danphe (Himalayan monal pheasant), Nepal’s national bird, which is commonly spotted around the lake.

Communities in the far-western region of Nepal are some of the least culturally explored in the country. With unique folk music styles, crafts, and agricultural practices separate from what you’ll find in Nepal’s heavily toured central and eastern hills. All this makes the trek to Rara Lake one of the more accessible treks on this list, with a maximum elevation of around 3,500 meters and only moderate difficulty. It’s the perfect first offbeat Nepal trek for when you’re ready to step off the beaten path.

Treklanders Tip: If you are looking for a beautiful and highly scenic flight experience, then flying to Jumla, the point of entry for Rara, should be on your list. It is almost like a bird's eye view of the Himalayan ridgelines as you are flying at a very low altitude through the mountain chains. Besides, the number of seats is very limited, so you should plan and book your journey in a good time. Also, when you choose Treklanders packages, you get all the internal flight arrangements and full trek support included.

7. Makalu Base Camp Trek — The Fifth Giant's Shadow

Makalu Base Camp - Makalu Base Camp Trek

  • Max Elevation: 5,100m (Base Camp)
  • Duration: 16–20 Days
  • Difficulty: Very Strenuous
  • Best Season: Mar–May / Oct–Nov
  • Makalu Barun National Park

At 8,485 meters high, Makalu is the world's fifth-tallest mountain. A sharp and splendid pyramid is probably the most alluring mountain in the entire Himalayan range. The presence of other giants around Everest makes it impossible for the latter to match the stark and pure silhouette of Makalu against the sky. The Makalu Base Camp trek, which brings you to this amazing peak via the Arun Valley and the wonderful Makalu Barun National Park, is one of the least popular high-altitude routes in Nepal, despite giving access to truly world-class mountain views.

The trek kicks off in a lush subtropical forest, which /is followed by/ goes steeply after a while through rhododendron gardens, alpine meadows, and finally, high glacial terrains at the base camp of 5100 meters. What you see is not only Makalu alone but a panorama including Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse, and Chamlang in perspectives entirely unlike those seen on the standard Khumbu route. People who have done the Everest Base Camp usually say that Makalu provides such views of Everest that are more spectacular than those from the Khumbu side.

Makalu Base Camp Trek
Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu Barun National Park is one of Nepal's natural treasures in terms of biodiversity. The park is home to a variety of habitats extending from subtropical forest at 435 m to snow-capped peaks at more than 8,000 m. The park supports several endangered species of animals such as red panda, clouded leopard, snow leopard and Bengal tiger, to name a few. Besides, the park boasts over 400 species of birds. The thing about Makalu that sets it apart is the blend of outstanding mountain beauty and the essence of being truly wild: no roads leading into the inner valley, very limited teahouse facilities, and the amazing combination of being both beautiful and lonely.

Treklanders Tip: The Makalu Base Camp trek is ideally combined with an Arun Valley approach if you want to get the variety of landscapes and cultures to the maximum. Our custom Makalu itineraries could be lengthened to include a crossing into the Khumbu region through the remote Amphu Lapcha pass, which is suitable only for the most experienced trekkers.

Beyond the Summit Photo: What These Treks Really Offer

Nar Phu Valley Trek
Stunning view after crossing Kang La Pass during the Nar Phu Valley Trek

There is a mode of Himalayan trekking that is essentially about achieving milestones: the base camp reached, the pass crossed, the selfie taken at the summit. This model is perfectly valid and very rewarding. On the other hand, Nepal's non-mainstream treks provide more than a mere sense of accomplishment. They are a way of authentic exposure to the wild landscapes seemingly untouched by humans, to the communities whose lifestyles have been shaped by centuries of living at high altitudes and in isolation, and also to the natural world, which still harbours animals like the snow leopard, red panda, and Himalayan wolf in significant numbers.

A monk of the Tsum Valley is asking you to witness a morning puja. A yak caravan on the Dolpo salt route, its movements unchanged for a thousand years. The bright pink dawn light illuminates the walls of Lo Manthang. These are not images in a photo album. They are contact points with a reality very different from the usual everyday life.

These are the treasures of Nepal that very few know about. They have been waiting, teasingly grandly, quite indifferent to your discovery. Treklanders will guide you there.
