10 Best Less Crowded Treks in Nepal: Hidden Himalayan Trails for 2026
Discover Nepal’s best hidden treks with peaceful Himalayan trails, authentic culture, and breathtaking mountain views away from the crowds.
One of the hottest new trekking destinations in Nepal‚ the Manaslu region is wild and remote‚ dominated by the world's eighth-highest mountain‚ Mount Manaslu (8‚163 m (26‚781 ft))․ Compared with the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna trails‚ during peak trekking seasons‚ Manaslu offers a more authentic Himalayan experience‚ with fewer visitors‚ more customary villages‚ and equally stunning mountain views․
The Manaslu Circuit Trek‚ the premiere trek in the area‚ takes 13 to 20 days and circumnavigates Mount Manaslu through the Budhi Gandaki river valley with exciting suspension bridges‚ subtropical forest‚ glaciers‚ high meadows and the famous Larkya La Pass (5106 m/16752 ft)․ The circuit connects the Gorkha district trailhead with the Annapurna Circuit trek in the Annapurna region at Dharapani‚ making it easy to combine the two into an epic multi-week trek.
The Manaslu Circuit is strenuous․ The Larkya La is one of the toughest passes and often trekked after midnight in sub-zero temperatures‚ making it a test of endurance․ Trekkers should be acclimatized to high altitudes and in good physical condition to trek the Manaslu Circuit․ Facilities are simpler than in better-known trekking destinations‚ including teahouses‚ basic food‚ shared sanitation‚ and limited communications except in larger villages․
Till 2008 the Tsum Valley was closed to foreign visitors․ One of the most socially isolated areas of Nepal‚ it is an ancient Tibetan cultural enclave in the Himalayas‚ home to descendants of Tibetans who practice an ancient form of Nyingmapa Buddhism․ Ancient monasteries‚ sky burial sites‚ fossil-lined river beds and mani walls that stretch for hundreds of meters add to the atmosphere․ The 20-Day Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is a highly recommended trek‚ the most complete exploration of the Himalayas․
The ideal months to trek are during spring (March to May)‚ when there are wild flowers and good views in the morning, and autumn (September to November)‚ when there is the best weather and mountain views․ The Larkya La Pass is snowed in and dangerous from December to February․ There are tricky conditions from June to August, due to the monsoon rains․
The Manaslu area was once a trade route between Nepal and Tibet․ The region is rich in Tibetan Buddhist influence‚ which is visible in the villages‚ prayer flags on bridges‚ whitewashed chortens‚ gongs of monasteries booming in the valleys, and flickering butter lamp-lit gompas. High-altitude communities of Samagaon and Samdo show traditions of living in the Himalayan region․
The Manaslu Circuit requires a Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)‚ an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a Restricted Area Permit (RAP)‚ and you need to go with a registered government guide․ Treklanders Adventures handles all permits and has experienced‚ registered guides to assist with your trek․
Sweeping Manaslu views • Larkya La Pass crossing • Tsum Valley monasteries • Birendra Tal glacial lake • Budhi Gandaki gorge • Wildlife including snow leopard, red panda, and Himalayan tahr.
Treklanders offer the circuit in 13-day, 14-day, and 20-day formats. Visit Manaslu Region Trek to explore the full range.
Larkya La Pass, which is situated at 5,106 meters (16,752 feet), not only marks the highest elevation point of Manaslu Circuit Trek but also stands among the most challenging mountain pass crossings in Nepal trekking. Walking up from Larkya Phedi, one has to leave the camp even before the break of dawn (generally 3-4 AM) so that one can have the daylight at the peak and also have time to come down to Bimthang before it snows/gets windy. The pass entails 7-10 hours of hard walking in cold and potentially icy situations. Those going on the trek must have their body fully acclimatized, must have a good level of fitness, and must wear layers of insulation with waterproofing. Besides, it is obligatory to have a licensed guide, and Treklanders make sure that they give the complete preparation briefings before the crossing.
You will need a total of three permits: Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the Manaslu restricted zone, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the last part of the route, which leads to the Annapurna region near Dharapani. Besides that, having a licensed government guide is compulsory. Since March 2026, solo trekkers will be able to get permits by themselves, but the guide requirement will always be enforced at many checkpoints, like Jagat Philim Samaguon and Dharapani. Treklanders handle all permits and guidelines.
The Tsum Valley is an ancient, sacred Himalayan valley that lies north of the Manaslu Circuit and bisects the Tibetan border. The area was off-limits to travellers until 2008 and still is, without doubt, one of the culturally most pristine locations of Nepal. Locals of the valley are mainly people of Tibetan origin, carrying on with their old practice of Nyingmapa Buddhism. Numerous ancient monasteries, sky burial sites, mani walls several hundreds of meters long, and meditation caves together generate an unsurpassable spiritual aura. Most of the trekkers narrate that their visit to Tsum Valley was more than just a part of their whole trip in Nepal - it was a highlight! If you want to experience the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley, take our 20-Day offer, which covers the circuit and the valley.
The Manaslu region is much more isolated than the areas of Everest or Annapurna. Communication through the mobile phone network is only available in a few major villages. Besides, the teahouse facilities are rather basic, with simple food menus and shared facilities being the norm, mostly at higher altitudes. There are fewer medical posts and evacuation options, which makes it necessary to have good travel insurance with coverage of helicopter evacuation. And, the trails are narrower and less developed, which is just the reason why the area is so attractive to those trekkers who want a real" getting lost in the wilderness" experience with very little tourist infrastructure.
Along with the nearby Manaslu Conservation Area is a wildlife reserve for wide-ranging animals of the Himalayas․ Sightings in the area include Himalayan tahr (wild mountain goat)‚ blue sheep (bharal)‚ red panda and musk deer․ The conservation area is also home to various species of birds including the Himalayan monal pheasant‚ the national bird of Nepal․ The snow leopard inhabits the high alpine areas though is seldom seen․ The lower forests offer habitat to langur monkeys and numerous species of pheasant․ The high valleys support yak herds and local pastoralists․
The Manaslu Circuit Trek should not be attempted by inexperienced trekkers as it is considered difficult‚ with a high-altitude mountain pass above about 5‚106 m (16‚752 ft) in altitude and minimal teahouse accommodation or medical facilities․ A good level of physical fitness is required․ Trekker experience on high-altitude treks (ie‚ above 4000 m) before trekking the Manaslu Circuit is considered helpful․ If this is your first experience trekking in the Himalayas‚ Treklanders recommends that you sharpen your skills on a medium-difficulty trek like the more popular Langtang Valley Trek or Annapurna Base Camp Trek․
Treklanders Adventures offers three primary Manaslu region itineraries: the 13-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek (the most popular format, focused on the full circuit with Larkya La Pass crossing), the 14-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek (adding an extra acclimatization or exploration day), and the 20-Day Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek, the most comprehensive option combining the full circuit with the extraordinary cultural immersion of Tsum Valley. Each package includes all permits, a licensed guide, teahouse accommodation, and meals during the trek.
